Translation:
Corrupt Idol
Order: Spend the Corrupt Idol and another wizard in this rank. This wizard’s level for casting spells is increased by the level of the spent character for the next spell the wizard casts this turn.
“Slayer refused its power, but I am not so foolish.” – Azhraan the Foul

Advanced Planning
Change action to read: "React: Play after this character performs a Spend Order. If this character has not performed a melee strike this turn, discard a card to ready the character."

Blink
Change action to read: "React: Play after this wizard is targeted by another character with a melee strike, or action."

Desert Martyr
Change action to read: "Spend React: Kill Desert Martyr before a melee or ranged strike to make the strike a Critical Failure."

Fireball
Is a Spend Order

Gelatinous Wall
Should say "Gelatinous Wall" in its text

General Lund
Change action to read: "Spend Order: Once per turn, target up to two lower level spent (not stunned) Mercenary characters. Ready the target character(s).".

Halberd
Has the Weapon trait.

Hember's Signet
Is level 9 and gives no ATK or AC bonuses, like the other signets.

Kharma
This should read:
React: After a card effect makes a die roll a critical success, change the result to a critical failure, or vice versa.

Kringle's Bag
2nd ability is an Order.
The react (1st ability) now reads:
React: After an item equipped by this character is discarded by another player's card effect, shuffle the item into your deck.

Mirror Magic
Order: Perform an Order on an adjacent character as if it were printed on this character, paying all costs as necessary.
React: Play when a React on an adjacent character could be performed as if it were printed on this character. Perform the action as if this character had that printed text.

Portable Hole
First ability should read: "Order: Spend the Portable Hole to move this character forward or backward up to two ranks."

Portable Wall
This should read: Order: Spend one of your adjacent characters to move this character forward or backwards one rank

Prince Alaric
Add to his ability, after "the illegal rank": "...if your Warlord is a Dwarf"

Quadlibet
Characters targeting Quadlibet with melee strikes and ranged strikes receive no bonuses of any kind to the die roll. Effects which would raise Quadlibet's AC are ignored.

Reserves
Add: "You may not play a character that you could not legally play with your army's current formation."

Scale
"Dragon Slayer" should not be in bold text. Scale is not a Dragon.

Sigil of Bonding
Order: Target a character within one rank and attach this card to the character. While this card is attached, items equipped by the character may not be discarded by actions other than spells. If an item equipped by the character is discarded, he or she suffers one wound. The Sigil of Bonding will not prevent an item from destroying itself.

Silver Bane
Is a Mercenary.

Sir Robert
Change ability to read: "You may bring Free Kingdoms characters higher than 3rd level into play as if they were 1 rank lower."

Sir Tython
First react now reads:
React: Inflict a wound on Tython after he is targeted with another player's action that moves, spends, stuns, or kills him, to cancel the action and ready him.

Squire Arrigan
Is a Deverenian.

Vorgurn
Change ability to read: "Spend Order: Target a rank in your army. Until the end of the turn, all of your Free Kingdoms characters gain +4 AC while in that rank."

Yedraw's Tooth
Ability should read: "React: Spend the Tooth before this character makes a melee strike roll to kill the target of the melee strike if this strike inflicts one or more wounds."

Section B: Common Rules Questions

Critical Successes & Failures

Q: What is all this talk about "Critical Success" and "Critical Failures"?
A: The terms "Automatic Success", "Natural 20", and so forth are being phased out of card text. In their places are a single term to cover both situations.

Q: But my cards still have "Automatic Success" and "Natural 20" printed on them. How should I read them?
A: Whenever you see either term, replace them with "Critical Success". Whenever you see "Automatic Failure" or "Natural 1", replace it with "Critical Failure".

Q: So the Glyph of Fate now reads "Order: Discard the Glyph to make the next roll your army makes a Critical Success." Right?
A: Right.

Q: And the Vorpal Blade just looks for a Critical Success now, so it will still kill Astrals when used with the Glyph of Fate, right?
A: Right.

Q: If I use the Glyph of Fate to make my next roll a Critical Success, and my next roll is initiative, what happens?
A: If the roll does not have a target number, such as initiative or using the Mixed Potion, it is set to '20'.

Q: And a Critical Failure is set to '1'?
A: Exactly.

Q: What happens normally with Critical Successes and Astral characters?
A: They miss. Since a Critical Success is always '20', and '20' is even, it misses Astral characters. If you roll a '19' against an Astral character, it will always hit, and the result can not be changed - but it does not count as a Critical Success.

Q: Doesn't that make Astral characters better than Ethereal characters?
A: It does make them harder to hit. The Astral trait was designed this way, and there are other balancing factors to compensate for that.

Levels & Classes
Q: I have a 4th level fighter who can cast spells as though he were a 1st level wizard. If that fighter casts Magic Missile (which creates a number of ranged strikes equal to his level), how many ranged strikes does he create...1 or 4? This one's confusing the heck out of me!
A: Ok, there are two things you need to know when using actions that refer to a character's level:

  • 1. Whenever a card effect refers to a character's 'level', always use the character's current level as found within the icon on his or her card, but also including any effects that modify that level.
  • 2. Some effects only modify a character's level while the character is performing a specific action (e.g. when casting a spell). When the character performs such an action, the modified level only applies to the effects produced by that action. Any reacts to the action still use the character's normal level. Equally, if an effect only modifies a character's class while performing an action, the modified class only applies to the effects produced by that action."

Q: Hmm, I think I get it. So my fighter would create 4 ranged strikes, right?
A: Yep, that's it. While he can only cast 1st level spells, any spell he casts that checks his level uses his 'real' level, which is 4.

Q: And if he's been Leveled previously, how many then?
A: It would be 5, because that's his current level (4, plus the permanent +1 bonus from the Leveled)

Q: Ok, this one's a bit trickier. I have Sir Rhawn next to Sir Magnus, and Sir Rhawn kills King Xod. Can Sir Rhawn play Leveled?
A: Strangely enough, no. Because of Sir Magnus, any Action card that Sir Rhawn plays considers him to be level 6. Therefore he can't play Leveled when he kills a 5th level character.

Targeting

Q: Can you explain when an action targets, and more importantly what an action targets?
A: Ok, first, the general rule - only ACTIONS and Melee Strikes target! Which means only effects preceded by the traits "Order" or "React" target.

An action targets a card when

  • a) the action declares the card as a target
  • b) at the time the action is played, it directly modifies the attributes, location or readiness of a card in play, or requires it make a check, test, or save.

Notes

  1. If a card falls under either a) or b), then it's targeted. Similarly, if multiple cards fall under either a) or b), all are targeted.
  2. Note the word "directly". This means if Yaw uses Decay to remove Bruntor's Helm from Krun, Yaw is not *directly* modifying Krun's HPs, only indirectly. Therefore Yaw would not be targeting Krun using Decay.
  3. Equipping an item does not target the character the item is being equipped to.
  4. Changing a card's location includes both moving it between or within ranks, and moving it out of play (to your hand or discard pile). This includes killing a character.
  5. The targeting happens as soon as the character in question would definitely meet the criteria. Fireball targets the victim of the ranged attack and the characters adjacent immediately upon being played, since it is immediately obvious all three will meet the above criteria (be the target of a ranged strike or be forced to roll a save). Magic Missile targets each victim at the time a given character is named for a ranged strike.

Q: If an action targets "the first rank", are all cards in the first rank targeted?
A: Yes. Any time an action targets a group, such as a rank, army, all rogues, and so forth, it targets each card in that group. This means Mass Blessing targets each character in the target rank when it is cast, and Mass Hallucination targets each character in the target army when it is cast.

Q: What if a character moves into a row previously targeted by Mass Blessing, or enters play in an army already targeted by Mass Hallucination? Would they be targeted then?
A: No. They would receive the effects of the spell (the bonuses from Mass Blessing, or be forced to take the test for Mass Hallucination), but because they were not present when the spell initially happened they are never actually targetted - and they have lost their chance to stop the spell from happening.

Q: Also, what exactly are attributes? I assume ATK, AC, Skill, Level, Class, Alignment. But is the number of wounds on a character considered an attribute?
A: Wounds and text box are also considered attributes.

Q: So, if I use the order on Hassimal, where I spend Hassimal and another character in my army to draw a card, then I am targeting both Hassimal and the other character, right?
A: Right. It spends both characters, which fits b), above.

Q: Does that mean every Spend Order or Spend React targets the character doing the action?
A: No. The "Spend" of "Spend Order" or "Spend React" does not count when determining targeting. Only the text of the action counts.

Attacks...

Q: First things first - what exactly is an 'Attack'?
A:
It's one of the fundamental Orders within the rulebook (see 'Smiting Foes'). To make an attack, the character first declares that he is doing so, and then spends. He can then perform one melee strike for each ATK number he has (displayed in the axe image on the top left of his or her card).

Q: So an Attack is just a series of consecutive melee strikes, right?
A:
Yep, that's it. Sometimes a character will only have one ATK number, so he or she can only make one strike as part of an attack. Other characters have two or more ATK numbers, and so can make one melee strike for each one.

Q: Is my character obliged to perform all his or strikes during an Attack?
A:
No, not at all. After you finish each melee strike, you can choose to stop or continue, up to the total number of strikes available to that character. But once you start a strike you must finish it, unless something happens to end it sooner

...and Melee Strikes

Q: Alright - so I've got this action card that lets my character perform a melee strike. Is that the same as an Attack?
A:
Not quite. A melee strike is just that - one melee strike, so even if your character has multiple ATK numbers, he or she still only gets to make one strike.

Q: And if my character does have more than one ATK number, which one do I use for the strike
A:
Sometimes the action will tell you what ATK bonus to use, and other times it won't. If it doesn't, always use the character's first ATK number listed on his or her card.

Q: What about weapons? If a character has a weapon equipped which gives an ATK bonus, does the bonus get added to all strikes that character makes, or just the first one?
A: All of them. Any actions that create melee strikes also benefit from the bonus.

Q: Cool! So if SS-saurth is equipped with a Main Gauche (+1 ATK), Gnorrow Yaw has used Mass Blessing on his rank (+5 ATK), and uses his Order to perform a melee strike, the strike has an ATK of +9, not +3?
A: That's right! A melee strike is modified by items and/or any modifiers from other card effects. The only thing that doesn't modify it is the character's own ATK bonus, as this is replaced by the ATK bonus on the card, and bonuses from weapons since SS-saurth's order specifies that weapons are ignored.

Q: Last one for now on melee strikes. My fighter is in the third rank, but I've just played an action that lets him perform a melee strike. Can he do it from the 3rd rank?
A:
This one depends on the action that generates the melee strike. Unless the card effect says otherwise, a melee strike can only target a character within one rank. However, if the action specifically declares the target of the strike, it overrides this rule and so the character can perform the melee strike from anywhere.

Actions & Cancellations

Q: What is an action?
A: Action is the generic term given to Orders and Reacts. All Orders and Reacts are actions, whether the order comes from a card or is one of the standard orders in the rulebook.

Q: If I perform a spend action and my opponent cancels it, do I remain spent?
A: When you perform an action, you must immediately pay all costs associated with that action. This means if the action requires your character to spend, you must immediately spend him or her to play the action. If the action is cancelled, costs are not reclaimed, so your character remains spent.

Q: When you say I must pay costs, what exactly do you mean by 'costs"? For example, if I had to discard a card, or kill a character, are those considered costs?
A: Whenever a card says "Do X to perform Y", or something similar, X is considered a cost. For example Toren Yscar says "Once per turn, discard a card from your hand to look at the top five cards of your deck." In this case, discarding a card is considered a cost, and so must be done as soon as you declare the action. If the action is then cancelled, the card remains discarded.

Q: If I'm bringing a new card into play, and someone cancels my action, what happens to the card?
A: It is discarded.

Q: I have a react which lets me cancel a certain kind of action, like Magic Resistance or Forge. When can I use it?
A: You use it as soon as the action meets the criteria for the react. In many cases, this will be as soon as the action and its target are declared. In other cases, this could be quite late in the action.

Q: I have Magic Resistance on one of my characters. When would I cancel Chain Lightning?
A: Since Chain Lightning chooses its targets when the action is declared, Magic Resistance would kick in as soon as the three targets are chosen. If the test for Magic Resistance succeeds, then the entire action fizzles without anyone getting hurt.

Q: What about Magic Missile?
A: As soon as one of the ranged strikes targets a character with Magic Resistance, the test can be made. If the Magic Resistance test succeeds, the rest of the spell fizzles and the remaining ranged strikes are lost. Any ranged strikes which have already resolved are unaffected.

Q: I have Forge in play, and someone plays Crush. When do I stop it?
A: When the person playing Crush actually chooses an item to be discarded. When Crush is initially played, there is no way of knowing for sure that any item will be targeted at all, since the melee strike could fail, the character being hit could die, the character being hit might not have any items, or the player using Crush might decide not to bother with destroying an item - any of which would remove the trigger for Forge. Since the melee strike has already resolved by the time Forge cancels Crush, it is unaffected by the cancelation.

Q: I want to cancel an action, and my React says to play it after the action is played. When do I do it?
A: When playing an action which cancels an action, such as Exhaustion's second react, the time to play that is after the action is declared and costs are paid but before the action is performed. Similarly, if a react will reduce the number of cards drawn by an action, then it is played after the action is declared and costs are paid but before any cards are actually drawn. Any other reacts which trigger off of text like "after a character performs an action" (such as the first part of Exhaustion) do so after all the parts of the action are performed.

Reacts

Q: I'm a bit confused with all these reacts that happen during a strike. Some happen after targeting, others before or after a die roll. Help!
A: Ok, here's the deal. When a player declares a strike, either by using a card or by announcing an attack, here's the sequence

  1. Play reacts that occur before the target is declared
    • Player declares the target of the strike
  2. Play reacts that occur after the target is declared
  3. Play reacts that occur before the die is rolled
    • The die is rolled
  4. Play reacts that occur after the die is rolled
  5. Play reacts that occur after it is determined whether the target was hit or missed.
  6. Play reacts that occur after wounds are suffered/inflicted.
  7. Play reacts to the character being killed (if applicable).
  8. Play reacts after the strike ends.

If at any time during this sequence a characters wounds equal or exceed his or her hit points, the character is killed. Reacts to a character being killed are immediately played at that point. If either the attacker or the target is killed during a strike, the strike ends at that point.

On the surface this seems complex, but it just follows the logical sequence of events during a strike. Once you understand the sequence, figuring out when reacts occur should be a relatively simple process. And remember, if two players wish to play a react at the same time, the player with the initiative gets to play his or her react first.

Q: I have two effects that occur as a result of an event in play - one is a react, and the other isn't. Which order should I resolve them in?
A: Always resolve Reacts first. After all reacts have been played, and if the event is still valid, then resolve other effects, in initiative order. For example, if a character equipped with a Squire's Sash is killed, and a react is used that reverses that (i.e. he's no longer killed), the event has no longer happened (the character has not been killed) and so the Sash does not resolve.

Q: Two of us have effects that occur as a result of an event in play, and neither are reacts. Which order should we resolve them in?
A: Start with the player who won initiative, and go clockwise.

Equipping Items

Q: Can I equip more than one ring, or more than one book?
A: You can attach multiple items so long as they don't have the same name and don't have the same bold-faced trait. For example, there is no ring trait, so you could equip a Ring of Vorn and a Narawat Ring, but not two Narawat Rings

Q: I've got a character who says he can equip a fighter item. What exactly is a fighter item?
A: It's any item with the fighter icon on it. Classless items that can equipped by a fighter are not fighter items. The same applies to spells... if a card says you can attach a wizard spell, you can only attach an Action card with the wizard symbol in it.

Q: Can Ichaerus equip Soft Leather Armor?
A: No. Soft Leather Armor specifies that it will not attach to Wizards. It does not matter what other classes he is, since it lists Wizards as a forbidden class.

Q: What about a Long Sword, which says Fighter and Rogue only? Can Ichaerus equip that?
A: Absolutely. That item does not forbid any classes, it just requires that the character equipping it belong to one or more classes listed. Since Ichaerus is a Fighter, he can equip it.

Feats

Q: If my character has a Feat e.g. Riposte +3, and he equips an item that also gives him a Feat bonus e.g. Riposte +4, is my character now Riposte +3, Riposte + 4, or Riposte +7?
A: Feats are cumulative, so he's Riposte +7.

Q: If I target a rank of 3 characters with Meteor Swarm, and one of the characters makes a successful Magic Resistance roll, does the entire Meteor Swarm fizzle or does it fizzle only for that one character?
A: It cancels the action, so the entire effect will fizzle.

Q: Certain cards like Break Through call for a Riding check (or other Feat). Does the character need to have Riding to use the card?
A: No. If the character does have Riding, that will add to the roll, but it is not required unless the card says it is required, with text like "If this character has the Riding feat...".

Hand Size

Q: Is there a maximum hand size, and if so, when do I discard down?
A: No, there's no maximum. If for some reason you end a turn with more than 5 cards, you are under no obligation to discard any of them, but until you do you won't be able to draw any new ones.

Q: I've got a card that increases my hand size. What the heck does that mean? Do I draw more cards, or does it just mean I can keep more in my hand at the end of the turn, or what?
A: The standard hand size if 5. This is how many cards you can draw up to during the Draw Phase. If a card increases your hand size by say, one, you could then draw back up to 6 cards each turn.

Stealth

Q: If my character is in someone else's ranks, can I use attached actions, like the spell attached to Ter-Soth?
A: If the text on whatever attached the action says the action is played "as if from the hand" (as Ter-Soth does), then no. If the text of the action grants an ability to the character, such as Experienced Archer, the ability may be used. Static numbers, such as those from a copy of Leveled! attached before the character got into someone else's ranks, remain changed as dictated by the card.

Q: My character is in another players formation, and I have this action which lets me equip an item...
A: Stop right there. Characters in other player's ranks may not equip items, unless there is very specific text to allow it in that situation. Also, do not forget that the character itself may not play action cards from the hand.

Q: Rathe is in another players formation, and has the Gloves of Mischief equipped. One of my opponent's guys declares an Attack, and targets Rathe with the first strike. Can I spend the Gloves to make him hit somebody else?
A: No. The strikes from an attack may only legally target other player's characters. Since the Gloves specifically say the new target must be a legal target of the strike or action, Rathe can not do that.

Q: What if the melee strike came from Storm Shadow's printed order?
A: In that case, go right ahead. That order merely demands that it hit someone in the same rank.

Q: Rathe equipped the Shadow Token this turn, then used the Stealth feat to get into the enemy first rank. He hasn't done anything else this turn. Can he use Stealth to cancel actions targeting him?
A: No. Equipping the Shadow Token was a non-Stealth action, so he can not use the Stealth feat to try cancelling anything for the rest of the turn.

Initiative

Q: Now that the Warlord is rolling initiative, can I use Exhaustion to spend my opponent's warlord?
A: No. Exhaustion can only react to a character performing an action, and Initiative is NOT an action.

Q: If Phon is in the same rank as my Elf warlord, do I get +2 when rolling Initiave?
A: Yes. Initiative is a character (your warlord) rolling a die.

Q: If I have more than one Warlord in play, because Maximillian and the Black Banner were both in play when my original Warlord died, do they both roll Initative?
A: No. Designate one of your Warlords to roll Initiative.

Trait Effects on cards

Q: I'm told that the text on Senek the Poisoner turns his attacks into actions which kill. Is this true?
A: Yes. Non-action text on a character card or item card equipped by a character can modify certain actions the character performs. In particular, this means the text on Senek which tries to kill characters turns his attacks into actions that kill.

Q: What about Yedraw's Tooth? That tries to kill!
A: True, but that is a distinct action which would kill the target, not non-action text.

Q: Is there a guideline I can use?
A: Yes. If the text is an action (an Order or React) which kills, draws a card, and so on, then it stands alone, and does not modify some other action - even its trigger, if it was a react. If it is not an action, and is on the character performing the action, it modifies the action performed (such as Senek). If it is on the target of an action, it does not modify the action. Finally, if it is non-action text which triggers on the card entering play, such as Daedelia, it modifies the act of putting the card into play.

Q: So this means if I am attacking the Terror of Sharn Keep, it is not an action to destroy an item (an eyestalk)?
A: Correct. Since the text is on the Terror, not the character attacking, it does not change the nature of the other character's attack.

Q: But bringing Daedelia into play is an action which draws a card, and can be reacted to accordingly?
A: Yes, because her non-action text modifies the act of putting her into play.

Other

Q: If my warlord goes out of play somehow but isn't killed, does that mean I can't be beat?
A: No, it means you have already lost. If at any time you have no character with the Warlord trait in play, you lose.

Q: Simply put, can a character's skill go into the negatives (via Confusion, Glimmer and such) or does it stop at 0?
A: Yes, it can go negative.

Q: Some cards give ranged strikes "up to X ranks away". Does that mean I can fire at a character in an adjacent rank?
A: No. The rulebook expressly forbids firing into an adjacent rank, and the wording on these cards is not enough to override that rule.

Q: Can a character's skill go into the negatives (via Confusion, Glimmer and such) or does it stop at 0?
A: Yes, it can go negative.

Q: What about AC? What happens when it hits zero, or goes negative?
A: Unless the effect that caused it to drop that low says otherwise, nothing happens. The character is simply very easy to hit.

Q: I have a character with a - ATK. I know it can not attack, but what number does it use for other melee strikes?
A: If the action generating the melee strike does not say, then is uses a base ATK bonus of +0.

Q: Which way is "Forward"?
A: "Forward" is always towards the front lines of any army. Similarly, "Backwards" is always away from the front lines. The 2nd rank of any army is the one behind the 1st, and so on. All armies' 1st ranks are in front of each other.

Q: When a card has a React based on when a character "moves into this rank", do characters being put into play trigger the React?
A: No.

Q: I heard there was a ruling coming to limit Overlords - is that right?
A: Yes. The use of multiple Overlords has caused more trouble than it ought to, so the following rule is in effect:
Add to the end of the "Raising Troops" section of the rules the following text: "Some characters have the Overlord trait; you may not bring an Overlord into play if you already have a character in play with the Overlord trait."

Q: I have an Overlord with the "Unique" trait printed on it. Can I use Duplicate?
A: Sorry, no. Duplicate overrides the restriction imposed by the rules for "Unique", but doesn't have any text to override the "Overlord" restriction.

Q: What about Reindeer? Is there something limiting them?
A: Yes.
The trait Reindeer appears on 4 of the characters in the Santa Slayer promotion. You may not bring a copy of a Reindeer card into play if there is already one in play in your army with that name. This trait does not affect character selection for your initial formation.
This means that the Santa Slayer on Christmas and Christmas Eve may start with 3 of one Reindeer, 2 of another, and then bring 1 copy of each of the other Reindeer into play during the game.

Q: That looks a lot like how Unique works. Can I Duplicate Reindeer?
A: No. This is a different trait from Unique, so Duplicate has nothing to work from.

Q: My warlord just went out of play, but was not killed. Now what?
A: That's it, man. Game over, man, game over!

Q: If a character in play is "discarded from play" or "sent to the discard pile", is it considered to be killed?
A: Yes, and cards like Leveled! may be used in response, if the other conditions are met.

Q: If I put a temporary character into play using an action, what are its alignment and faction?
A: Unless the action says otherwise, it is the same alignment as the character performing the action, and has no faction.

Q: STALLING
Using two (Duplicated) Slate Gargoyles, it's possible to set up an infinite loop so that each Gargoyle readies the other indefinitely. If my opponent is currently winning, what's to stop him stalling like this for the rest of the game?
A: Stalling in a tournament is illegal, pure and simple. If your opponent were to start doing this with the Gargoyles (or any other card), call over a judge. The judge must ask the player how many times he wishes to spend each gargoyle. Whatever number the player says (yes, including infinite), the judge declares that the Gargoyles have been spent that many times, and the turn ends.

Section C: Recent Rulings

Actions

Pit Fight
The attacks in Pit Fight may not be cancelled with Exhaustion.

Wheel of Death
Treat as if it says "Draw and discard up to three cards...".
No matter how many cards are drawn and discarded, it is one bonus coming from a single source.

Characters

Avatar of Kor
The Dwarven cleric is discarded from play, not from the hand.

Limestone Gargoyle
Since the last bit of text in the action demands that the Limestone Gargoyle be shuffled back into the deck, it must be shuffled in whether another Gargoyleis found or not.
Does not override normal restrictions on putting characters into play, such as Unique characters.

Items

Blood Moss
When it is moved to a new personality as part of the printed order (which spends the item), it retains its current state: spent.
This can not be moved to a stunned character, since equipping an item is an action.

Recent Errata

Mirror Magic
Order: Perform an Order on an adjacent character as if it were printed on this character, paying all costs as necessary.
React: Play when a React on an adjacent character could be performed as if it were printed on this character. Perform the action as if this character had that printed text.

Quadlibet
Characters targeting Quadlibet with melee strikes and ranged strikes receive no bonuses of any kind to the die roll. Effects which would raise Quadlibet's AC are ignored.

Section D: Glossary

Action: Any Order or React, whether from a card or listed in the rules.

Attack: A standard Order that does not require a card effect. A character attacks by spending to perform a number of melee strikes equal to the number of strikes listed in his or her ATK number (see Smiting Foes in the rulebook).

Draw a card: If a card effect triggers off of drawing a card, it means any time the player takes a card from the deck (not necessarily the top of your deck) and putting it into the hand. If instructed to draw a card, take the top card.

Hit point: The number of wounds a character can take before he dies. Found in the blood drop in the bottom right of each character card.

"Killed by a melee strike" A character is killed by a melee strike when he or she is killed by the wounds inflicted from a melee strike. If an action performed by the attacking character while making that melee strike kills the character, it is the action which killed it and not the melee strike.

Rank Requirements: A character who ignores rank requirements when entering play does not need to enter in the rank equal to his or her level. The character still cannot enter play if doing so would create an illegal rank

Ready: When used as a verb (i.e. "Ready this character"), it means turn the card upright to a Ready state.

Retrieving a card: Retrieving a card means taking a card from your deck or discard pile (most cards with the term specify which) and moving it to another location, such as your hand, in play, the discard pile, or the top of the deck. (Shuffling is not retrieving a card.)

Strike: Some cards refer to a 'Strike' rather than a 'Melee Strike' or 'Ranged Strike'. In these cases, the term 'Strike' refers to a melee strike only. Ranged strikes are only affected by effects that specifically state it.

Wound: Damage received by a character. Keep track of any wounds a character receives…if the number of wounds equals or exceeds the character's hit points, the character dies

Your army: A card in 'your army' is a card you control that is currently within your ranks.
